Educating Drivers to Become Safe Road Users

Promoting traffic safety education in response to the growing number of road accidents and fatalities is urgently needed. Thus, it is timely, that car makers Honda build the country’s first world-class driver training facility – the Honda Safety Driving Center along the East Service Road in Bicutan, Parañaque City.

The 2.3 hectare facility is a big help in educating present and future motorist on correct driving know-how, proper road courtesy and accident prevention techniques.

Unlike the present set-up of most Philippine driving school where student-drivers do public road driving as part of a course, HSDC’s expansive track effectively combines automobile and motorcycle instructions where safety mindset and driving proficiencies are developed in a controlled environment. The center put premium on life’s safety that is why they designed lessons that give automobile and motorcycle learners the opportunity to interact; allowing learners to understand road courtesy, driving discipline and safety maneuvers while their confidence is being developed.

In the motorcycle course, trainees can learn lessons in figure of-8, crank, narrow plank, slalom and bumpy path. These exercises are intended to develop essential skills on balancing, negotiating bends, braking and throttle control in varying speeds. While in the automobile course, trainees can test on the S-course, crank, slopes and various parking exercises – where knowledge and skills on analytical and precision driving are being cultivated.

Trainees can also test drive on the “low friction” braking course in its track where they will get to learn proper handling of automobiles and motorcycles in various slippery conditions. And in the HSDC’s dirt track, motorcycle drivers can learn how to properly and safely negotiate unpaved terrain or roads that are debris-filled, which is very common in the Philippines.

Educating road users is crucial in achieving safe roads. And if all driver trainees learned road discipline, driving techniques and proper vehicle maintenance, the HSDC is not only helping building a community of safe road users but also helping save life.
